All crystal, with a massive and ornate gilt clasp laden with art glass and faux pearls, our necklace is a confirmed early Miriam Haskell, and designed by Frank Hess.
This necklace is considered a "transitional" piece, according to accounts I have read quoting Cathy Gordon, co-author of the book "Miriam Haskell Jewelry". I have seen a version of this necklace with the Haskell logo on the "lip" of the clasp. I have also seen a more ornate version, with a chunky centerpiece and dangles using the same design as our clasp.
Only the finest Swarovski crystals and Italian glass beads were used by Hess for his famous creations.
This excellent craftsmanship is showcased in our four-strand piece. All strands have fine faceted crystal beads. The beads are separated by Haskell's trademark gilt seed beads, except closest to the clasp, where fluted disk beads separated them.
The thick rectangular clasp is superb, with a huge pink swirl art glass right in the center, surrounded by small florets of various color beads: translucent blue, amethyst, and green. There are also gilt florets and faux pearl florets. The decorated top hides the long push-in clasp closure. In typical Haskell fashion, all the elements on the clasp are hand-wired onto a filigree base.
The necklace is 1" wide across all four strands, with the clasp measuring slightly wider at 1 1/4" (x 7/8"). The necklace is 13 1/2" long, and hugs the neck quite nicely.
Very good to excellent condition, especially considering this is still in its original unretouched condition. The back of the clasp shows some goldtone wear, and does one corner of the decorated top (very minor). Other than these, the crystals are all in excellent shape, and the gilt bead spacers are still all richly gilt.
If you're looking for something quite grand that would also look good with any color you've got, this one's a cinch!
